As a regular buyer of abandoned storage units, I often wonder why there aren’t more people catching the online auction bug.
 

Then I remember my rookie mistakes, and realise there are a lot of people who start buying units, make some money early on, then get burnt and quit the game. It really shouldn’t be so hard, you just need to know where the money is…

When you watch the TV shows about Self Storage auctions, shows like Storage Wars, Auction Hunters or any of the picker programmes, you notice almost everyone involved has a shop where they can sell the items they find.  The fact is, you don`t need a shop and this is where I share my storage auction advice.

Step 1

When you bid on a storage auction, see what is inside and look at the condition of the items. Remember, you can sell almost anything online these days, and Gumtree and eBay are great platforms to flip items like old beds, tables and shelving.

Step 2

Find an outlet where you can sell the items that aren’t ideal for Gumtree and eBay. If you are lucky enough to find gold, silver or other valuable coins and medals, then a coin shop, or gold buyer will offer you really good prices, so to make a fast turnaround, just sell as quick as you can, as the best way to make money from storage auctions, is to sell as quickly as possible, otherwise you may end up needing to pay for storage.

Step 3

Be creative - find local farmer`s markets, flea markets or fairs, and sell everything; you’d be surprised what people are willing to buy, and pay for items. I went to a flea market on Saturday, and was surprised that the junk items sold better than the quality items, and I was just going to throw them away. Don’t throw away anything that can be sold at a flea market!

Step 4

Restore wisely; old wooden items can be lightly sanded and re-varnished, making them look as good as new, and old clothes can be washed and sold, making you money. Always remember, one person`s trash is another one`s treasure.

Step 5 

Enjoy it. If you do this regularly, you will find items that make you money.  Items like gold jewellery, antiques and well priced artworks do get found in auctioned storage units. And believe me, you will enjoy the thrill of the chase.
